Places to fish during high water

Most of the streams in the area are still running high from the rainfall we received last week. The head water streams of the Savage River where high but fishable. When the upper Savage USGS gauge is around 150 cfs the feeder streams will be at a good fishing level. I was looking to fish some may fly hatches, but when I got to the creek the water was still pretty high. I tied on a black and olive woolly bugger and put it into every likely spot and there was usually a brookie waiting to pounce. For the next 2 hours I must have released close to three dozen 7-11 inch fat brook trout. It is truly amazing how many fish there are in this river system.

  1. Great photos. I live in Baltimore and am planning on coming to the Savage on Saturday morning, fishing all day, camping that night and fishing Sunday. I will fish the tailwater some but would like to fish some of the upper river and/or feeder streams. Any recommendations on where to begin and camp Saturday night.

    Thanks,
    Andy

  2. Thanks for the support! Since it is Memorial Day Weekend I would stop at the Savage River State Forest headquarters located across from New Germany State park to see what is available here is a link pdf of the campsite map http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/savagemap.pdf
As far as fishing all the tributaries of the Savage above the dam are fishing well. If you do not see a car at a parking area try the stream. Poplar Lick campsite will get you away from the road and the stream is full of brookies. Stay away from the main Savage below Poplar Lick it is put and take and will be over run this weekend. Have fun hope this helps.

    2. I am headed out there this weekend, planning on fishing the middle Yough for two days. You work at the savage river lodge? Do they have a fly shop there? I have seen the signs but have never been.

    3. There is an area that we sell fly fishing supplies but I would not call it a fly shop. I am the head guide at the lodge. There is usually some confusion among fly fishermen where the lodge is. It is not on the lower Savage. It is on the upper Savage in the middle of the state forest. You should check out the website www.savageriverlodge.com . Do you have the number to check the releases from Deep Creek?

    4. Great, I will swing by some time and check it out. We are actually fishing the Yough in PA. I think that is the middle Yough. I do love that section by DCL though. Keep up the work with the blog I really enjoy it.

  6. Thanks for the tips, Travis. I camped out beside Poplar Lick--caught 12 brookies Saturday afternoon and another 6 Sunday afternoon on Big Run. I struck out on the lower Savage Sunday morning but I guess we all get humbled sometimes.

  7. I am glad you had a good time. It is such a beautiful area. The lower Savage is a tough stream, but that is why I love it
