Beaver Creek 03/24/13

Beaver Creek is a spring creek southwest of Hagerstown Maryland. There is a very good brown trout population in this creek and it has produced some huge fish. I stopped in at the Beaver Creek Fly Shop located right next to the stream to pick up some supplies and to find out what is new with the stream. I haven't fished this stream in 9 years and wow has it changed. James at the shop game me a map and suggested a few flies to try.  Any one planning to fish Beaver Creek should stop by the shop for the latest info. The habitat improvement looks great and there is way more holding water than what I remembered. Cress bugs took a lot of smaller fish in the beginning of the day, but around 2 pm a good BWO hatch started. I switched to a emerger and caught some nice small wild browns. I wanted to chase some of the bigger resident fish, so I switched to a sculpin and moved several nice fish including the one in this video. It was a great day and I cannot wait to fish this stream again.

Casselman River 03/22/13

I fished the Casselman near Grantsville Maryland on Friday and it was cold! The air temp was 29 and the water temp was 33. When the water is this cold I look for slow deep water and with the river flowing around 160 CFS there is not a lot of this kind of water on the Casselman. When I found good holding water stone fly and may fly nymphs fished deep and slow took fish. When the water warms up the fish will be more active and so will the bugs. Hopefully we will have warmer weather in the next two weeks.

About Me

Hi everyone! I am starting a fishing report blog for western Maryland. I have just moved back to Maryland after spending 5 years as a fly fishing guide in Colorado. I guided around Durango on the Animas, Dolores, and San Juan rivers. I grew up fishing the trout waters of western Maryland and I cannot wait to apply what I learned in Colorado to the rivers here. I learned a lot out west but it would be foolish to say I know it all. I think every time you go fishing there are opportunities to learn something new either from the water or form other fisherman. I will be posting what I learn on this blog along with videos and pictures. Most of my posts will be fishing reports from around the area. Right now like every one else I am waiting for spring to get here and it cannot happen soon enough!
